The Project

  • This project saw a complete reconfiguration of the Breast Care department over two main phases with sub phases during the larger, second phase of the works.
  • The department needed revamping and re-structuring to improve the patient flow through, increase scanning capacity and also just a more pleasant environment for staff and patients alike.

Due to the amount of work needing to be undertaken, and it being a live hospital, phased working was required with tight deadlines which could not be extended due to departments moving into completed areas at the end of each phase.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

  • Due to the amount of work needing to be undertaken, and it being a live hospital, phased working was required with tight deadlines which could not be extended due to departments moving into completed areas at the end of each phase.
  • The department had finite scanning resources prior to the commencement of the work, so we had to work with them to develop a phasing plan, to make sure that they had a minimum amount ofUltrasound Rooms and Mammography Rooms at any one time, to ensure that they could still fulfil their lists throughout the delivery of work.
  • Collaborating with the specialist, nominated contractors installing the new Mammography and Ultrasound equipment to ensure that all of their requirements were met so that there could be no hold ups with their installation.

The Works

  • Full range of construction activities incorporating extensive reconfiguration of stud partitions and ceilings to alter layouts.
  • Bespoke desking, cabinetry, door sets and some eye catching finishes were key visual facets of this project.
  • M+E works included BMS integrated AC and AHU’s, power, data, fire alarm and access control adaptations. Fire stopping and fire compartmentation works were undertaken upon completion to ensure any breaches of compartment lines were adequately treated.
  • We undertook enabling works for the specialist installs which were mainly electrical but we also had to provide a structural concrete base for a mammography machine being installed in an area that was previously a raised timber floor.
