The Project

PCI was appointed to carry out the phased refurbishment of office and reception spaces across three levels of the existing hospital estate at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. The works were delivered as part of the Trust’s wider programme to establish a new Surgical Block building, with the refurbished spaces forming a critical link corridor between the existing and new facilities.

Although this was not a D&B contract, PCI produced many drawings for items such as finishes for clients to sign off & highlighting aspects of the built for Building Control to note & sign off. For example, corridor widths in fire escape routes etc).

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Delivering the project within a live hospital environment presented a number of logistical and clinical challenges:

  • Pneumatic Tube System Relocation:
The relocation of a critical pneumatic tube system had to be completed out of hours under a tightly controlled time window to avoid impacting hospital operations.
  • Working Adjacent to Live Theatres:
A section of the works on the 5th floor was located directly within a functioning theatre department. This required timed deliveries outside of normal working hours, enhanced infection prevention control (IPC) procedures, and ongoing liaison with the hospital’s IPC lead to maintain patient safety.
