The Project

We were tasked with refurbing the entire Milton Mouse Childrens Unit, providing a more user friendly environment with modern technology making better use of the existing building.

With it being such a sensitive area for children to receive medical care, we spent a lot of time with the staff, including doctors and consultants to provide exactly what they wanted-within timeframe and budget.

Aspects of design on this project included providing waste pipe design due to no underfloor void, electrical and fire alarm installations and a new external ramp.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

During the tender process, we were advised there was a void under the floor which would allow us to run all drainage/waste pipes. Upon inspection on site this was proved to be a solid slab which we were unable to chase out due to the load bearing beams. This meant we had to locate the existing vertical wastes which were within the steels of the building framework and run all wastes surface mounted and box them in after.

Milton Mouse is located next to another children’s ward and A&E, meaning we were often liaising with staff and patients.

The Works

PCI installed all new electrics throughout, including fire alarm and emergency lighting.  All new plumbing pipework was also installed to all new sink and toilet locations, with the use of pendock and boxing.

In order to make the building secure and functional for the trust, we installed new CCTV and access control throughout included door entry cameras which are controlled from behind the reception desk

Bespoke medical cabinetry was fitted, as well as new medical gases within the new bedhead trunking.

New internal and external doors and a new window were also fitted as part of the refurbishment

A tailor-made folding wall was installed in one of the consultant rooms to allow them to have two uses for the space depending on the patients they have.
